MRSAC is a well-established premier institution and recognized as one of the best State Centre in Natural Resource Monitoring and Management by offering innovative, effective and optimal solutions by blending RS and GIS technologies with the known technique.
Maharashtra Remote Sensing Application Centre (M.R.S.A.C) was founded in September 1988 under the administrative control of Planning Department, Government of Maharashtra. It was registered under the Societies Register Act,1860. The Centre’s matter is managed by the Governing Body with its members appointed by GoM and assisted by Executive committee constituted by Governing Body.
At the inception time, the Centre initiated its work in small laboratory in the premises of Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT formerly VRCE) campus, Nagpur, with limited Infrastructure, Instrumentation and Skilled manpower. MRSAC started its journey with four Scientist, four Technical and five Supporting staff, mostly on deputation. From august, 1994 Centre started functioning from its new office building from same VNIT premises with increased Scientific, Technical and Administrative staff.
Previously the RS-Satellite Data was available in the form of transparencies (Dia-positives) and Hard copy paper prints and the interpretation was carried out visually using HME (High Magnification Enlarger), LFOE (large Format Optical Enlarger) and Light Table for various application projects. The outputs were a manually colored paper maps with symbology and legends done by cartographers.
With progression of time and technology the RS data storage and analysis media changed. Now the of RS data available in digital mode and analysis performed digitally with dedicated software and hardware.
The Centre is keeping in pace with cutting-edge technology in the field of RS-GIS, GPS, 3D-technology, Radar, Lidar, Web-GIS, Cloud Computing. Now the Centre has highly specialized dedicated computer labs as 3D-Photogrammetry lab, Drone data processing Lab, Web-portal and web-site generation lab. Also, the Central Data Storage Facility (SAN), Continuous Electricity backup unit (diesel generator) and Solar Energy Generation Unit, Dinning facility and an Auditorium with capacity of 250 sitting accommodation are the assets of the Centre.
The Centre has spread its wings by establishing two new branch offices at Mumbai (2013) to keep liasoning with GoM. and Pune (2014) as headquarters of mostly government dept resides in Pune. Hence smooth functioning and timely decision making in the various projects of the state can be possible.
MRSAC is a “Nodal Agency” for developing a Maharashtra Geo-Spatial Digital Database System-(MGDDS) for Govt. of Maharashtra and works in coordination with Planning Department, GoM. Under this Centre has created a GCP library with high positional accuracy using DGPS Survey technique covering entire Maharashtra state and utilized for referencing of all thematic layers. A gigantic task of generation of Ortho-Rectification of High-resolution satellite data using GCP is under process.

Since last three decades of hard work in the RS-GIS, the Centre have a huge repository of various scale thematic database. These databases are following the Maharashtra Geo-database Design Standards with valid Topology and Domain structure and published to cloud as a Web Services.
The Centre is serving the data through MRSAC Geo-Portal to various line departments for multiple queries, analysis, updating, etc. The Geo-Portal is inaugurated on 20th December 2011 by hands of Honorable Chief Minister of Maharashtra State. The key is the only unique standard dataset available to various Govt. Departments makes decision faster, simpler, qualitative, feasible, transparent and effective.
MRSAC is a recognized as one of the best State Centre in Natural Resource Monitoring and Management by offering innovative, effective and optimal solutions by blending RS and GIS technologies with the known.
With self-growing and enriching the state with scientific & technical inputs via recent technologies; using the abundant and wide-ranging digital database, on various theme, the MRSAC re-affirms its commitment towards a better, transparent, vibrant and implementable E-governed Maharashtra.
Serving the State through RS-GIS digitally …. A move to Digital India Initiative……
